Banish the --ose

Way back before there was an obesity epidemic, there were still people who wanted to lose weight. A common bit of advice, one that is still good, is to read the label of any packaged food and not eat it if sugar was listed higher than 4th. Ingredients are listed in order of how much there is in the product. If peas are listed first, there are more peas than anything else. So 4th place would ensure that you weren't getting a lot of sugar. Now, some companies were a little deceptive because they would list different kinds of sugar separately, so it would seem like there was less that there really was. Any ingredient ending in "ose" is a sugar. Table sugar is sucrose. Lactose is the sugar in dairy. Fructose is the sugar in fruit, though it is good for you while it is still in the fruit but not as a separate sweetener. There are others as well. The general advice to minimize sugar is good, because it gives you calories but not much else in the way of nutrition. The new labels list sugars, carbs, protein, and other things, but you should still read the ingredients list and steer away from anything that has an "ose" higher than 4th, or different "oses" scattered throughout.
